Mavis Spencer Selected As 2010 Miss Golden Globe for 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards to be Telecast Live on NBC on Jan. 17. Mavis is Daughter of Alfre Woodard and Writer/Producer Roderick Spencer.
HOLLYWOOD, CA, December 8, 2009 – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Mavis Spencer as its selection as Miss Golden Globe for “The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards” to be telecast live on NBC on Sunday, January 17, 2010. HFPA President Philip Berk made the announcement at the Second Annual Golden Globes Party Saluting Young Hollywood, which took place at Nobu West Hollywood on December 8. Traditionally, Miss Golden Globe, who assists in the Golden Globes ceremony, is the daughter of a well-known celebrity.
Mavis, age 18, is the daughter of Golden Globe winner Alfre Woodard and writer/producer Roderick Spencer.
“We are delighted that Mavis will join us on January 17 to celebrate ‘The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards,’” said Berk at the announcement. “She’s a lovely, multi-talented and very poised young lady.”
“It means a lot to me as a young person to be a part of something with such a rich history,” said Mavis. “I know how my mom feels when she brings home a statue. And to hand someone a token of their accomplishments when they’re elated will just be really cool. I have memories of my mom traipsing off to the Globes, but this year she’s with me! And we’re going to have so much fun.”
Soon to be a college Freshman (Columbia University class of 2014), Mavis has appeared in Teen Vogue and InStyle Magazine. Something of a renaissance woman, Mavis plans to model and study acting at Columbia, while continuing her already illustrious career in Equestrienne Show Jumping.
Previous Miss Golden Globe honorees include Rumer Willis (daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis), Laura Dern (daughter of Diane Ladd and Bruce Dern), Joely Fisher (daughter of Connie Stevens and Eddie Fisher), and Melanie Griffith (daughter of Tippi Hedren).

GLOBE VOTERS REMEMBER
Long memories have helped early film releases
As the end-of-year skies clear and kudo givers attempt to distinguish genuine supernovae from puny white dwarfs, does the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.’s telescope boast a slightly longer focal length than anyone else’s?
You probably won’t get much argument from the producers of “Bend It Like Beckham,” “About a Boy,” “Thank You for Smoking” or “The Devil Wears Prada,” all of which opened in Q1 or Q2 but by December were resurrected to be named among their years’ finest by the 80-odd members of the Golden Globes-giving org.
Award watchers marveled at last year’s performance of “In Bruges,” a violent, funny little U.K. import from all the way back in February that ended up nabbing three Globe nods, including one in the top category. Did the outcome directly influence the film’s coveted Oscar nom for original screenplay? Guesses HFPA president Philip Berk: “Almost certainly.”
These phenomena are undeniably cheering to the likes of Peter Saraf, producer of this year’s well-received March release “Sunshine Cleaning,” which must depend on long memories to gain nominators’ attention. “When you come to the end of the year with an original screenplay and two extraordinary performances that are among the year’s best, you start to find ways to remind people this is a movie they loved in a quieter time.” As veteran campaign consultant Tony Angellotti puts it, “It’s usually necessary to transport voters in the way-back machine concerning the comedy category.”
The Globes nominators don’t have to go quite as way-back as other groups, due to a combination of factors including the most obvious — the Globes’ separation of dramas from comedies and musicals.
Berk denies that his colleagues have longer memories than others, but Angellotti points out, “Oftentimes the year-end comedies are not the type or style of comedy they prefer, and therefore we have to look back to the first part of the year to flush out the field” with tuners like “Mamma Mia!” and “Hairspray” or last year’s winner, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
A survey of past early-release HPFA contenders reveals mostly lighter fare, but dramas have been nominated in recent years — “Wonder Boys” (February); “The Horse Whisperer” (May); “The Bridges of Madison County” and “The Truman Show” (both in June) — none of which found their way into the Academy’s top five.
A subtler contributor is the obligation of the foreign scribes to keep up with virtually everything as it comes out. Berk notes, “We not only have to see the film for Golden Globe consideration, but to write our interviews and make a living as journalists.” Their attention, then, is as keen in spring as in deep midwinter, whereas working pros in the Academy and guilds likely don’t see many more films in the course of a year than an avid civilian.
According to one awards consultant, “Opening early is better; the challenges at the end of the year are almost overwhelming.” A feature managing to stay in the critical and public eye after an early opening — 2005′s best picture “Crash,” for example, or “The Hurt Locker” this year — takes on a sense of inevitability as “the little pic that could.” (“Little Miss Sunshine” producer Saraf notes the July release “was still in theaters at Christmas; we had to pull it out to get the DVDs into voters’ stockings.”)
By contrast, WB prexy of domestic distribution Dan Fellman likes Clint Eastwood at Christmastime. After parlaying late-year releases “Letters From Iwo Jima” and “Million Dollar Baby” into major award glory, WB has high hopes for Dec. 11′s “Invictus.” He notes that the week from Christmas through New Year’s is the year’s biggest in terms of movie attendance, “and you want to have one of your bigger guns in there.”
But some think Warners waited too long to open “Gran Torino,” which didn’t connect with audiences until the week Oscar nomination ballots were due. Years earlier, however, an August release may have actually helped “Unforgiven,” giving it time to mature in voters’ minds. “Like (early May’s) ‘Gladiator,’ it crossed over from what was expected to be a male audience to a general one, propelled by women and all ages. It was a phenomenon,” Fellman observes.
Given their professional obligation to stay abreast of new releases year-round, the foreign press have a jump on other voting orgs who depend on a glut of screeners arriving each December. As one Academy member opines, “You get 50, 60 DVDs, and you say, ‘God, I haven’t seen these 20 or whatever.’ We have to make choices. How many DVDs can a working person watch in a week? Two?”
For the HFPA, screeners are merely opportunities to spot-check a fondly remembered pic or performance. As Berk himself offers, “If there’s anything in the borderlines, I’ll go to the trouble of seeing the DVD again.”

HFPA shakes up kudofest with a live show and host

What’s a venerable awards ceremony to do when ratings are down, other newbie awards shows are nipping at its heels and the world in general is moving at a much faster pace than when it began? Change things up, of course.
Which explains why the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. (HFPA) along with NBC-TV and Dick Clark Prods. have decided to do things a bit differently for the 67th Annual Golden Globes Awards, due to air Jan. 17. They will start the shake-up by going with a nationwide live feed at 5 p.m. PST, when the show actually begins at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, rather than a delay to 9 p.m. PST.
“The core of the decision was that the Globes are unique,” says Orly Adelson, president of Dick Clark Prods. “They are the first award show of the year, and, being so, the curiosity level is enormous. But today, with the information that comes through so quickly, there’s no mystery anymore (after the fact). So the minute it is live, everybody has access to the information via the Internet.”
On the subject of the plethora of awards shows, Globes exec producer Barry Adelman says: “We think there’s room for everybody, we don’t get into competition. We’re just worried about our show.”
The Globes’ Nielsen ratings has plummeted from 26.8 million total viewers in 2004 to 2009′s 14.9 million. That’s partially a result of the Globes getting KO’d by the writers strike in 2008 (which led to actors refusing to attend the ceremony — which became a press conference) and then feeling a bit weak in the legs in 2009.
“Two years ago we actually had the strike, and last year we had the same problem with the actors strike looming,” Adelson points out. “So in neither case could we come full blown and do the marketing that normally is done for this show. So much energy went into ‘will it or won’t it’ that it held us back in many ways.”
So the “collaborative” decision to go live on the West Coast, emulating the Academy Awards, was one way to up the ratings ante. Another is to add a host, for the first time in 15 years.
“The idea of having a host emanated from DCP and Barry Adelman,” says HFPA prexy Philip Berk. “He felt that it would certainly help the show if we had a host, in the sense that you can get a lot of pre-publicity over having a host.
“I told him that most of the awards shows are trying to emulate us, and the fact is that our show is driven by awards. We don’t have musical numbers, we don’t have standup routines, and this is what most of the critics, and we assume most of the public, find so attractive about the Golden Globes. So the idea of being regressive and going back and doing what the others are doing, and failing at doing, seemed completely a nonissue for us.”
But the HFPA, DCP and NBC happily came to an agreement over one man, who said yes to their offer.
Berk recalls telling his cohorts, “The idea of a host is absolutely something that the Hollywood Foreign Press is not going to even entertain. The only person who I feel could possibly do anything for the show, who could really make a difference, and who I would accept as host would be Ricky Gervais. But he’ll never do it!”
Gervais, who made his hosting announcement complete with a bottle of beer in his hand, is sure to keep up the tradition of the Golden Globes being a slightly tipsy affair, where anything can happen. Be it Jack Nicholson in a well-lubricated state (was it Valium as he claimed, or the Moet Champagne that is prominently displayed/advertised on every table every year?), Christine Lahti winning while in the john, Liz Taylor losing it while trying hard to present the best picture award or Ving Rhames giving his award away to competitor Jack Lemmon, the Globes are always what its promoters insist on calling “the party of the year.”
No matter how the national live feed plays out this year, it really isn’t the free-flowing booze that makes the HFPA’s annual party such a laugh.
“The truth is that the party atmosphere is not based on the fact that there’s booze up on the table or anything like that,” Berk insists. “This party atmosphere is mainly because of what we have — this fabulous pit, which no other awards show has — in which you have, within arm’s length of each other, the most important producers, studio executives, all the movers and shakers of Hollywood. That’s where the party atmosphere comes from, the fact that we have this intimacy that no other awards show has. And then the booze on the table, well, we’ve never had people getting drunk, because all we serve is the Moet Champagne and the wine.”

Oscar winners hail Scorsese as Cecil B. DeMille choice
The HFPA’s choice of Martin Scorsese to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the coming Golden Globes ceremony has been greeted with great enthusiasm by those who know and have worked with him.
Two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, who worked with the director on The Age Of Innocence and The Gangs of New York, said: “He is and remains, for most actors working today, a man of the most supremely indescribably gifts as a director. Taxi Driver was a seminal film for all of us when I was a kid and living at that time in South East London. We wanted to know every single thing, not just about those people in the world he was describing, but about the man behind the story—Scorsese.

One of the great joys which I had never expected in my life was to meet that man and get to work with him. And then get to work with him again. That will always remain one of the great, great joys of my life. There’s nobody like him.”
Robert DeNiro, who won his Best Actor Oscar for the Scorsese-directed Raging Bull, has worked with the filmmaker eight times and is currently talking with him about a ninth collaboration. “Everybody knows that we’ve done a lot of movies together and we have a great relationship,” he says.
“I think any actor who works with Marty will tell you that he’s open to ideas. If you suggest something he’ll grab it and try and do it and if it doesn’t work he’ll get around it. It might not work but he’ll try, so the actors feel very very confident that whatever their ideas are they’re being listened to and received with open arms and that support is a very important thing to have.”

HOLLYWOOD, CA, November 17, 2009 — There will be five contenders for the Best Animated Feature category when the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards nominations are announced at 5 am (PT) on Tuesday morning, December 15, it was announced today by Philip Berk, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association voted last week to expand this year’s number of nominations for Best Animated Feature to five.
The amended rule now reads: Eligible films must be feature-length (70 minutes or longer) with no more than 25% live action. If less than eight animated films qualify, the award will not be given, in which case the films would be eligible for Best Picture. If less than twelve animated films qualify, the category will be limited to three nominations per year.
“The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards,” hosted by Ricky Gervais, will be broadcast live coast to coast Sunday, January 17 on NBC (5 to 8 pm PT, 8 to 11 pm ET) from The Beverly Hilton.
“The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards” will be seen in more than 160 countries worldwide and is one of the few awards ceremonies that span both television and motion picture achievements. The special will be produced by dick clark productions in association with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Philip Berk is President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Orly Adelson, president of dick clark productions, and Barry Adelman will executive produce the special. Chris Donovan is the director and dick clark productions’ Bob Bardo is the executive in charge of production.
