TALKING POINT: HELENA BONHAM CARTER
Helena Bonham Carter, Golden Globe nominee as Best Supporting Actress for “The King’s Speech”, said to HFPA journalists:
“”Everyone’s got an opinion about the Queen Mother, because she’s so well known, but my job I guess was to get beneath her public front of amazing sweetness, because underneath she was a very powerful and strong woman. Royal photographer Cecil Beaton described her as a marshmallow, but made with a welding machine, and I felt like I wanted to capture that duality.

Ricky Gervais will use his trip to next month’s Golden Globes to fit in some movie work as well.
The British comedian, who will be hosting the awards show for the second year running, will shoot a walk-on part in Disney’s new Muppets movie the day before the show.
In a recent conference call he told interviewers he wanted to “push the boundaries a little bit more” at the ceremony.
The Office and Extras star said he wants to have “even more fun” this time around.
“I had such a great time last year but like anything you do for the first time you go, ‘Oh, let me do it again! I can do it better!’ he said when asked for his thoughts on the 2010 ceremony.
“I think I pitched it about right but I think I can go a little bit further. I think I can go out and really throw away the shackles of worry; I don’t mean I’ll go out and get drunk and have no planning or input, but I think I can certainly have more fun with it and more fun with the room.”
He admitted that he had given himself a “weird restriction” during the previous event by only writing gags about stars who were handing out trophies, but said he is planning on extending his joke targets this time.
“I’ve realised I can reference anyone in the room,” he explained. “I’m going to have even more fun with it, probably go a bit further and push the boundaries a little bit more. What’s the worst that can happen? I didn’t expect to be invited back a second time and I won’t do it a third so I have nothing to lose.”

Over forty kites and twenty plus pairs of boxing gloves will soon be on their way to Cuba thanks to the generosity of some Hollywood Foreign Press members.
The kites and gloves were sent to journalists as movie-related promotional items and are now being passed on to young people in Cuba, where they are in great demand but not easily available.
One member, who for the past ten years has been taking medications, vitamins, baseballs and other hard-to-obtain items to Cuba, will be taking the kites and gloves with him on his visit next month.
Kite flying is a popular hobby in Cuba, and the country is noted for its boxing program and the number of Olympic medal-winning amateur boxers it has produced, although gym equipment is always in demand there.

During 1979 interviews by the Hollywood Foreign Press with director Blake Edwards and his wife, actress Julie Andrews, for the movie 10 starring Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, HFPA correspondent Elisa Leonelli from Italy asked:
What are the advantages and disadvantages of working with your husband?
Julie Andrews: It’s the best way to work, for me at least, because he’s the easiest man to work with. Obviously I can ask him anything I want and we can talk about it after work; so the advantages are tremendous. The only disadvantage is, if I have to do a love scene with somebody else and he says: I don’t like it, darling, please do it better.
Blake Edwards: It depends who you are doing it with…

“What an incredible morning! I’m so honored and appreciative to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing my performance in Covert Affairs. Im so thankful to Doug Liman, Matt Corman and Chris Ord for creating such a strong and incredible character. And to my family at USA Network, thank you for your outstanding support and promotion of the show. I’m so thrilled.”
WILL FERRELL & JOHN C. REILLY ARE AT IT AGAIN!
Comedians Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have once again created a humorous sensation with their website Funny Or Die.
This time Ferrell plays David Bowie visiting Bing Crosby (John C. Reilly) during the holidays. The result? A hilarious and maybe even yet another classic version of the two Christmas classics, Piece on Earth and The Little Drummer Boy.
DOUBLE NOMINEE JOHNNY DEPP TALKS GOLDEN GLOBES
“One nomination would of course be a great honor, but two, is simply astonishing. I am floored, truly, by the HFPA’s kindness and generosity. I wish to thank them dearly, as well as all those many wonderful souls who made the films in question possible. My deepest gratitude and respect goes out to you all.” Johnny Depp

Founded in the 1940s during World War II, the HFPA was originally comprised of a handful of LA based overseas journalists who sought to bridge the international community with Hollywood, and to provide distraction from the hardships of war through film. Sixty-six years later, members of the HFPA represent 55 countries with a combined readership of 250 million in some of the world’s most respected publications.
